is there any way to arrest a person who illegally filed a return in your name a few years ago? also how long does it normally take to clear your name with the IRS when you’ve been a victim of identity theft?

Dear erika: I have worked with the IRS several times for people in your situation and they have been most helpful. Try 800-829-1040 or contact the IRS Tax payer Advocate in your state. They (the Advocate)will help clear your name on the IRS books. Now the issue with most banks is different and sometimes very trying. Identity theft usually makes the banks very concerned about issuing checks on refunds etc.
This advice was prepared based on our understanding of the tax law in effect at the time it was written as it applies to the facts that you provide. Click on my profile to read more.
