I may be a possible victim of identity theft, what steps should I take now?

Today, corporate headquarters at my job called me in to a meeting to tell me I may be a possible victim of identity theft. They said they ran their monthly background check and found out that someone has three different addresses under my social security number. I ran a credit check and everything is in tact. I even went to the addresses of the person on my SSN and she said that person is her sister and is currently living in Canada.

What steps can I take to get these different addresses removed from my social security number?

Close the credit card that is in question and shed all of your paper that have your address on them. Don’t trust anyone with you personal information.
First call all of your creditors and notify them of identity theft. Then go to you local Social Security Office and report it to them as well. You may need to get a new Social Security Number created and change all of your credit card account numbers. Don’t forget to inform your bank so that they can change all of your credit/debit cards and you may want to change your checking/savings account numbers. Also, verify with the DMV that nobody has been in to get a drivers license or ID card under you name.

My son had this happen and a collection agency started harassing him for money he supposedly owed. At the time he supposedly owed this he was 11 and 12 years old.

Contact the Federal Trade Commission and fill out an id theft affidavit
