You should contact the three credit reporting agencies, get a copy of your credit report to determine what fraudulent activities have occurred, and file a fraud report with each of the credit agencies. This should prevent any new accounts from being opened in your name. You should additionally dispute the and fraudulent activities on your credit report. Contact the companies that have been effected, and contact their security department. Cooperate with their investigation. The bank should usually have an investigator assigned to handle the fraud accounts. Most of all, be patient, this is frustrating and time consuming.

The local police will have to be responsible for the case if it originated from your home town. Or, it would be the police in the town where it is occurring, but your locals will work in concert with them.

The FBI will not take a report from you on this nor will they investigate it UNLESS several banks are involved and it becomes an interstate (several state crime) and the FDIC gets involved and a crime is committed against a bank using your identity.

What you should do immediately now is this:

Go to this sight and pull your free credit reports:

Look for the 'Fraud Alert' tab. Read the whole site over. Call the big three bureaus and have them put a block on your credit so NO ONE can use your identity to obtain more credit.

Stay in touch with your local police and see what they are doing.

Believe me, these are hard cases to investigate.

Your best bet is to block all of your credit, open a new checking and credit card / debit account and give the police time to work and for the credit bureaus to do their investigation.
